Since 1996 I have focused on producing and directing presentations and business theater at strategic meetings, conferences, trade shows, and corporate events. These presentations have ranged from very theatrical as pictured on the left where I directed and appeared as "The Judge" in a dramatic look at the future of the oil industry, to more traditional presentations. I have combined scripted material, orginal music, improvisation, and dramatic visual imagery to convey complex messages to a wide range of audiences including the leaders of major corporations in the United States and Europe. SOME HIGHLIGHTS: October 2005 San Francisco, California Client: Global Business Network

Powerful Times: Co-produced and directed the opening night presentation for GBN's annual Forum. The event was a "book launch", with a presentation by Eamonn Kelly, CEO and author of the book Powerful Times. Also produced a digital story, "Story of Our Times", which opened the event.

October 2005 San Francisco, California Client: Digital Storytelling Festival DS8

Stories from Next Exit: Co-produced and directed a tribute to digital storytelling pioneer, Dana Atchley. The event was the finale of the three-day festival held at KQED, the PBS affiliate in San Francisco.

June 2003 London, EnglandClient: Shell International

The "Risk World" Scenarios: collaborated on script development, co-produced and directed dramatizations of three future scenarios examining risk management 20 years in the future. The presentation was performed at the William A Beveridge Hall at London University, for a group of scholars and practitioners in the field of risk management for the various sponsoring agencies.The sponsors included: Electricite de France; The Health and Safety Executive, UK; and The European Patent Office.

November 2002, San Francisco, CA Client: Around the World Foundation

Around the World in 80 Ways: Program manager for a group of disabled adventurers attempting to travel around the world using 80 unique means of transportation. Coordinated week's logistics for San Francisco leg of the adventure. Produced and directed a benefit performance of Keith Johnstone's The Life Game™ at the SomArts Cultural Center in SF. The event benefited the ATW foundation and the Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors and featured an interview with the adventurers and improvised scenes recreating memorable events from the journey.

June 2001, San Diego, California Client: Christus Health

Co-developed scripts, produced and directed scenario dramatizations based on four scenarios focusing on the future of the health care industry. This presentation was part of a three-day annual conference for the leadership of this thirty hospital system and was based on eighteen months of work by their strategic task force and GBN practitioner Nicole Boyer.

February 2001, London, EnglandClient: Escador for MN Services

Produced and directed the Dilemma Dinner™ for the new Escador Idea Factory at Ealing Studios in London. This was the opening night event for a 3-day workshop exploring new strategic options for the Dutch financial services company MN Services. The Dilemma Dinner™ was co-developed by Fratelli Bologna and The Idea Factory San Francisco and involves the use of masked actors representing dilemmas faced by companies in the process of change. This was the second such event I've produced at the new Ealing facility, the first being for Royal Dutch Shell in November 2000.

August 2000, Midland and Traverse City, MIClient: Dow Corning Corporation

Produced and directed dramatizations of three future scenarios developed by Global Business Network for DCC. Staged the dramatizations in two cities at strategic planning meetings for the officers and top management of Dow Corning Corporation. Co-developed the scripts and collaborated on the overall meeting design.

March 2000, Scottsdale AZClient: Lucent Technologies Networkcare Professional Services

Co-produced and collaborated on the development of five scripts for scenes to be performed over four days at an offsite sales meeting. The scenes took a comic look at cultural issues that arose from a recent merger. Directed the cast of five and performed in three of the five scenes.

July 1999, Cambridge MA Client: Ernst & Young Center for Business Innovation

Consulted on the design for a three-day conference focusing on the application of complexity science to business management. Created and produced one hour multi-media presentation, A Course in Adaptation.The presentation involved audience participants exploring improvisation as a complex adaptive system.

May 1999, Sonoma CA Client: Global Business Network

Co-produced and directed The History of Capitalism.This one-hour theatrical presentation was the opening session of a four-day forum focusing on the future of capitalism as a sustainable economic system.

March 1999, Four City Tour Client: Round Table Franchise Corporation

Produced @Night with Dick Betterman, a two-hour comedy spoof of late night talk shows which was performed at four regional conferences. Regional sales and performance awards were presented during "commercial breaks." Also consulted on the design for the conference training sessions.

August 1998, San Francisco CA Clients: The Idea Factory & Global Business Network

Produced Jamming with Johnstone, a ninety-minute lecture, demonstration, and performance featuring: John Kao, author of "Jamming," and founder of The Idea Factory; Keith Johnstone, author of "Impro," and creator of Theatresports; and Peter Schwartz, author of "The Art of the Long View," and chairman of the Global Business Network.

June 1998, San Francisco CA Client: The Alliance for Convergent Technologies

Produced a ninety-minute improv show using an experimental social prototyping technique to explore themes that surfaced during the two-day meeting focusing on the rate of change in new technologies.

May 1998, Maastricht Netherlands Client: Royal Dutch Shell

Directed A Court of Inquiry (the Future on Trial), a two-hour mock trial exploring divergent views of the impact of technology on the future of the oil industry. The "advocates" were a leading futurist, and the former Assistant Secretary General of the UN. "Witnesses" included an economist, a biotech expert, a climatologist, a UN delegate, the inventor of virtual reality, and a Tibetan monk. Created a system to randomly divide the group of 600 in to small groups of 40, and move these groups through seven different experiences in two and a half-hours.

May 1998, San Francisco CA Client: Global Business Network

Co-Produced and directed three "Television News" programs at three-day forum. Created a 300-seat television studio in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Opened first day of the conference with News Forum, a news-talk format featuring a guest panel. The second day started with KGBN News Now, with two "news anchors" interviewing guests via "live remote." The finale show used different show formats reporting News from the Future. This was a theatrical look at four very different possible futures.

June 1993 - December 1996, San Francisco CA Client: Bay Area Theatresports (B.A.T.S.)

Served as Producer and Artistic Director for the San Francisco chapter of the international Theatresports organization. Presented weekly improv competitions and produced three international Theatresports tournaments featuring teams of improvisers from four countries and seven regional leagues. Produced numerous experimental format long-form improv shows.

January 1982 - December 2004, San Francisco CA Client: Fratelli Bologna

Founder of this award winning theatrical troupe. In addition to writing and performing, served as production manager/coordinator for dozens of original theatrical productions in cities around the US and Canada through 1996. Continued producing, directing, and performing in Fratelli Bologna's business theater productions through December 2004 when I retired from the company.
